Escalating Tensions Over Form 6 and the Voter‑Roll Overhaul

New Delhi – The political showdown between the ruling BJP and the opposition INDIA alliance intensified on Tuesday, with the BJP accusing the Congress of turning a petition to the Election Commission into a political weapon. According to the BJP, the opposition’s demand to scrutinise the voter‑registration procedure is a calculated attempt to revive Rahul Gandhi’s standing ahead of the next polls.

BJP Challenges Congress’ Interpretation of Supreme Court Remarks

National spokesperson Sambit Patra argued that the Congress is distorting the Supreme Court’s observations on Form 6 – the application citizens file to be entered onto electoral rolls. Patra emphasized that the apex court never declared the form unlawful; it simply ordered a fact‑finding mission into alleged manipulation.

Opposition’s Continued Push Against the CEC

Leaders of the INDIA bloc converged on the Election Commission’s New Delhi headquarters, seeking clarification from Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar about the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) drive. They contend that procedural tweaks to Form 6 were introduced without adequate oversight and are calling for greater transparency.

BJP Refutes Allegations of Illegality

Patra maintained that the Supreme Court’s notices are procedural, not a verdict of wrongdoing. He pointed out that the Election Commission itself has affirmed that the statutory Form 6 remains unchanged and that the revision exercise was executed under guidelines already sanctioned by the commission.

Congress’s Counter‑Narrative

The opposition insists that the purported changes to Form 6 were irregular and that the CEC acted unilaterally. Rahul Gandhi has framed the debate as a litmus test of the commission’s impartiality, while the Congress demands an independent audit of the voter‑roll update process.

Underlying Motives Behind the Protest

Patra suggested that the demonstration serves more to give Rahul Gandhi a media platform than to safeguard electoral integrity. He warned that weaponising constitutional bodies could become a recurring strategy for the opposition.

With both sides entrenched in their respective narratives, the Form 6 controversy is poised to dominate political discourse as the nation approaches the next election cycle.
