All newcomers, no sitting members
The Bharatiya Janata Party has put forward eight fresh names for the ten Rajya Sabha seats up for election in Uttar Pradesh. None of the candidates currently occupies a seat in the Upper House, signalling the party’s drive to inject new talent before the October 16 poll.
Caste equilibrium at the core
Reflecting Uttar Pradesh’s intricate social tapestry, the roster stitches together representatives from four major communities.
OBC representation
- Dharampal Singh – Lodhi MLA from Aonla, offering grassroots legislative experience.
- Prakash Pal – head of the state OBC Morcha, known for his organisational work across the Kanpur‑Bundelkhand belt.
- Shruti Gangwar – emerging leader from Bareilly, daughter of senior BJP stalwart Santosh Gangwar.
Brahmin voices
- Radhakant Ojha – senior lawyer from Prayagraj and former president of the Allahabad High Court Bar Association.
- Gopi Krishna Pandey – veteran party functionary with deep organisational roots.
Dalit representation
- Vidyasagar Sonkar – former Lok Sabha MP and ex‑member of the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Council.
- Priyanka Singh Rawat – former Barabanki MP, bringing seasoned parliamentary insight.
Rajput inclusion
Ram Pratap Singh Chauhan, state general secretary and former Etmadpur MLA, completes the caste mosaic.
Organisational weight and gender balance
Beyond caste, the BJP’s slate showcases deep party‑building credentials. Prakash Pal’s tenure overseeing the Kanpur‑Bundelkhand region and Ram Pratap Singh Chauhan’s role as a state‑level strategist highlight the emphasis on seasoned operatives.
Two women—Priyanka Singh Rawat and Shruti Gangwar—are also on the list, marking a modest but meaningful step toward gender representation.
Election timetable and opposition lineup
Nomination papers must be filed by October 6, with the voting scheduled for October 16. The Samajwadi Party has already named Ram Gopal Yadav and Dhanraj Nathwani as its contenders, setting the stage for a contest that could range from a straightforward BJP victory to a tightly fought battle for the Upper House seats.
