Homs, Syria – A passenger bus traveling near the Masyaf Bridge in the western countryside of Homs was suddenly caught in a hail of gunfire, leaving at least seven dead and four wounded. The vehicle was ferrying employees of a local firm who were heading home after a regular workday.

Syria’s official news agency SANA identified the shooters only as unidentified gunmen. The injured were rushed to nearby medical facilities, while security forces moved swiftly to cordon off the area.

Formal Inquiry Initiated

Authorities have launched a formal investigation to determine who ordered the attack and why it was carried out. No organization or individual has claimed responsibility, and officials have not publicly named any suspects.

"We view this strike as an attempt to destabilise the region and undermine security," said Brigadier General Bassem Mohammad Shaaban, commander of the Homs Internal Security Forces.

Forensic teams are collecting evidence and interviewing witnesses as part of the ongoing probe.

Workers Targeted on Their Way Home

Initial reports confirm the bus was transporting civilian workers back to their homes after completing their duties. Emergency responders transferred the casualties to hospitals throughout the Homs area, where they are receiving treatment.

Officials stressed that the investigation will continue until the full circumstances are clarified and those responsible are brought to justice.

Syria’s Ongoing Security Challenges

The attack occurs against a backdrop of chronic insecurity that has persisted for more than 13 years of conflict, even after the fall of Bashar al‑Assad’s government in December 2024. While authorities strive to stabilise the country, sporadic shootings and violent incidents continue to surface across various provinces.
