Gangotri Dham Begins Its Seasonal Pause

The Uttarkashi administration announced that the revered Gangotri Temple will be officially closed for the winter season on 10 November at 12:05 PM. The chosen moment coincides with the auspicious Abhijit Muhurat and overlaps with the traditional Annakoot and Govardhan Puja festivities.

Ceremonial Farewell

The temple’s governing body, led by Secretary Suresh Semwal, confirmed the timetable after the ninth day of Sharadiya Navratri. As the final temple bells echo, the ceremonial palanquin carrying the divine image of Goddess Ganga will be escorted out amid a marching band from the Army and chants of “Jai Maa Ganga.”

The Trek to Mukhba Village

Following the closure ritual, the sacred palanquin will set off for Mukhba, a remote high‑altitude settlement that serves as Ganga’s winter residence. The convoy is slated to reach the village on 11 November, the day of Bhai Dooj, where a series of prayers and rites will be performed.

Pilgrims are encouraged to gather at the makeshift shrine in Mukhba, where they can offer their respects and receive blessings for the ensuing six‑month period. This relocation guarantees continuous worship despite the main sanctuary’s inaccessibility due to heavy snowfall.

Why the Seasonal Shift Matters

The winter shutdown marks the conclusion of this year’s Char Dham pilgrimage circuit. While the high‑altitude location forces the primary sanctum to close, moving the palanquin sustains the spiritual rhythm for devotees eager to maintain their connection with the holy river goddess.

For the next half‑year, Mukhba will become the focal point of devotion, allowing worshippers to stay linked to Goddess Ganga until the Gangotri Temple re‑opens with the spring thaw.
