New Delhi – After six seasons at the top, India’s women’s cricket captain Harmanpreet Kaur announced on Tuesday that she will relinquish the Test, ODI and T20I armbands to devote her full attention to batting and fielding.

An Era of Leadership Draws to a Close

Now 37, Kaur has been the face of Indian women’s cricket, steering the team through five Tests, 51 ODIs and 155 T20 internationals. A highlight of her command arrived just weeks ago, when she helped India secure a second consecutive Asian Games gold medal in the women’s competition.

Her decision follows the recent World Cup triumph, offering a storybook finale to a captaincy marked by both triumphs and trials.

Outcome of a BCCI Strategy Session

The announcement came a day after a tactical meeting in Guwahati that gathered Kaur, vice‑captain Smriti Mandhana, head coach Amol Muzumdar and BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia. The session mapped the future direction of the Indian women’s team, and Kaur’s subsequent statement adds a pivotal piece to the transition plan.

Team Over Personal Ambition

Reflecting on her tenure, Kaur emphasised that she consistently placed the collective good above any personal agenda. She recalled making hard choices, weathering criticism, and constantly striving to build a more resilient unit.

She also underscored the need to open pathways for younger talent, acknowledging that not every decision would satisfy everyone, but insisting that the ultimate aim was the squad’s long‑term health.

From Setbacks to World Cup Glory

Kaur’s spell as captain blended disappointment with landmark achievements. While she endured defeats, intense scrutiny and pressure, she also savoured the pride of leading India on the global stage.

The crowning moment was undeniably the World Cup victory – a fitting bookend to her captaincy that highlights the significance of her departure for Indian women’s cricket.

She expressed confidence in the depth of the squad, believing the side possesses the talent and foundation needed to keep advancing.

The Playing Career Continues

Stepping down from the leadership role does not equate to retirement. Kaur made it clear that she remains available for international duty and intends to keep contributing on the field, driven by her passion for the game.

She thanked teammates, coaches, support staff, the BCCI, her family and fans for their unwavering support throughout her captaincy journey.

While her chapter as India’s captain has ended, Kaur’s playing career is set to forge ahead, offering the team a seasoned performer in a refreshed capacity.
