Rally turns into a standoff with the Election Commission
New Delhi – A demonstration organised by the INDIA alliance against the Election Commission erupted into a high‑stakes confrontation on Tuesday. Opposition legislators set off from the Parliament precinct heading for the Commission’s Nirvachan Sadan headquarters, only to be halted by security forces near the NITI Aayog campus where concrete barricades had been installed.
When the march was blocked, several MPs dropped to the pavement and began a sit‑in. Rahul Gandhi, the Lok Sabha’s Leader of the Opposition, climbed onto a police barrier and waved the national flag as the protest continued. Prominent participants such as Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav and other senior figures from the INDIA coalition joined the action. Police later detained Rahul and Priyanka Gandhi along with a number of other demonstrators as they attempted to disperse the crowd.
Opposition challenges the Special Intensive Revision (SIR)
The core grievance centres on the Election Commission’s Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls. Opposition parties allege procedural irregularities and are demanding that the SIR exercise be scrapped. They also seek the reinstatement of names they claim were unjustly deleted from voter lists.
Another flashpoint is the handling of Form 6, the instrument meant for adding fresh names to the rolls. Critics contend that the Commission’s approach to Form 6 has been opaque and biased, turning the roll‑revision issue into a broader political dispute.
Heightened security across central Delhi
Authorities deployed a heavy security presence along the planned march route. Police erected barricades at strategic points and prevented protesters from advancing toward Nirvachan Sadan. After being stopped, the opposition leaders shifted their demonstration to the vicinity of the Akashvani Bhawan, where they continued to voice their demands.
Political fallout
The ruling BJP dismissed the allegations, accusing Congress and its allies of attempting to undermine democratic institutions through street protests. The episode marks a further escalation in the ongoing tussle over voter‑roll revisions. While the Election Commission stands by its current revision process, opposition parties have vowed to keep pressing for the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and for a reversal of the SIR exercise.
