New Delhi – On 6 October, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) confirmed that left‑handed opening bat Smriti Mandhana will take over as the full‑time captain of the Indian women’s cricket side, succeeding Harmanpreet Kaur.

Mandhana’s Rise on the International Stage

Since breaking into the national squad in 2013, Mandhana has evolved into one of the most consistent run‑scorers in women’s cricket, representing India across Tests, ODIs and T20Is. She has already captained the side in 18 T20 Internationals and four One‑Day Internationals, and has served as vice‑captain for several campaigns. The BCCI cited this blend of experience and her deep familiarity with the playing group as pivotal to her elevation.

Dominance in the Women’s Premier League

Mandhana’s leadership credentials extend beyond the national team. As the head of Royal Challengers Bengaluru, she guided the franchise to Women’s Premier League triumphs in 2024 and again in 2026, cementing her reputation as a shrewd tactician and motivator.

Harmanpreet Kaur’s Enduring Impact

While Harmanpreet Kaur will continue to feature in the playing XI, she will step down from the captaincy. Her tenure saw India clinch its first Women’s ODI World Cup in 2025 and capture gold at the Asian Games, leading the side across all three formats.

The Road Ahead for Mandhana

Mandhana’s debut series as full‑time skipper will be against Zimbabwe, beginning with a three‑match T20I set followed by three ODIs starting on 16 October. The BCCI expressed confidence that her extensive international exposure, prior leadership experience, and proven success in the WPL will enable her to steer the team toward new heights.
