Background of the case
In October 2024, the lifeless body of a six‑year‑old girl was uncovered inside a deserted warehouse in the Daladabari area of Jaigaon, Alipurduar. Subsequent investigations pointed to the child’s neighbours as the chief suspects in what was described as a savage rape and homicide.
Investigation and arrests
Police determined that the crime stemmed from a premeditated kidnapping, noting that the principal accused had lured the girl away with false promises. Critical evidence included surveillance video, forensic reports, and DNA profiling. Bablu Mian was apprehended first, followed by Zaidul Islam, Manir Hussain and Majibul Sheikh.
The probe recorded statements from twenty‑two witnesses, bolstering the material evidence and confirming the participation of all four men.
Trial proceedings and verdict
The fast‑track bench deliberated for roughly eighteen months before delivering its judgment. Prosecutor Debaranjan Bandyopadhyay had pressed for the harshest punishments permissible under law.
Finding the evidence against the quartet compelling, the court sentenced Bablu Mian to death. The three co‑accused—Zaidul Islam, Manir Hussain and Majibul Sheikh—were each handed life imprisonment. The bench rejected the prosecution’s claim that the victim’s body had been incinerated, as the allegation could not be proved beyond reasonable doubt.
Beyond the custodial penalties, the state government was directed to pay ₹6 lakh as compensation to the grieving family. The victim’s mother said the family had hoped for the severest possible punishment.
While the judgment concludes the fast‑track trial, the convicted individuals retain the right to challenge the decision before higher courts.
