Anantnag: The Jammu & Kashmir police have registered a criminal case against National Conference legislator Altaf Ahmad Wani, popularly known as Altaf Kaloo, and party spokesperson Umesh Bhat. The FIR was lodged after the MLA’s Personal Security Officer (PSO) lodged a grievance.
The complaint was recorded at Sadar Anantnag Police Station under Sections 121 and 351 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). Investigators are now examining the facts surrounding the allegation.
Altercation Allegedly Occurred During a Security Detail
According to the PSO’s statement, a verbal dispute broke out while he was on duty escorting the legislator. The argument supposedly escalated, and the officer later accused Kaloo and Bhat of physically assaulting him.
The PSO said he sustained injuries, prompting him to file the FIR.
The matter remains under investigation; no court has yet ruled on the accusations.
Kaloo Refutes the Accusations
Altaf Kaloo has categorically denied the allegations, calling them baseless. He claims he raised concerns with security officials after noticing the PSO’s repeated absence from his post.
Kaloo says he informed the Senior Superintendent of Police (Security) and requested verification. He alleges the officer responded by pushing him during the subsequent confrontation.
The legislator has appealed to senior police authorities, including the IGP of Kashmir and the SSP of Anantnag, for an impartial inquiry.
Police Weigh Both Sides
The FIR presents two conflicting narratives. The PSO maintains he was assaulted while performing his duties; Kaloo offers a contrary version of events.
Kaloo has hinted at lodging a counter‑complaint against the officer and urges investigators to scrutinise all statements and evidence before proceeding further.
A formal probe has been launched to ascertain the exact circumstances of the reported clash and to establish the factual matrix of the case.
It is crucial to understand that an FIR merely records a complaint; it does not imply guilt. Any subsequent legal action will depend on the outcome of the ongoing investigation.
