Customs personnel at Indira Gandhi International Airport intercepted a passenger arriving from Bangkok and seized more than 12.8 kg of material believed to be cannabis, valued at roughly ₹4.5 crore on the global market. The discovery underscores the agency’s intensified focus on curbing narcotic smuggling.
Traveller Identified During Routine Profiling
The operation unfolded on 6 October 2026 at Terminal 3, when the passenger disembarked from Air India flight AI‑2335. Although initially directed toward the green channel, officials noticed anomalies during standard profiling and diverted the traveller for a secondary inspection.
The green channel is typically reserved for passengers with nothing to declare; however, customs retains the right to summon any individual for further questioning when suspicion arises.
Thirteen Concealed Packets Found in a Metallic Trolley
Upon opening the silver‑coloured metallic trolley, officers uncovered thirteen sealed polythene packets. Preliminary laboratory tests are pending, but the contents are suspected to be cannabis, commonly referred to as marijuana.
The combined net weight of the seized material was recorded at 12,859.5 grams – approximately 12.86 kg – with an estimated market value of about ₹4.5 crore.
Customs Releases Operational Details
Delhi Customs (Airport and General) posted a concise briefing of the bust on its official social‑media platforms, highlighting passenger profiling, targeted baggage checks, and continuous surveillance as core tactics for intercepting illicit shipments.
In this instance, the profiling alert triggered a deeper inspection, leading to the uncovering of the hidden packets.
Ongoing Investigation
Investigators are now tracing the origin of the confiscated substance, mapping the logistics of its transport, and identifying any co‑conspirators. The probe will also examine whether this haul is part of a larger trafficking network and determine the intended purpose of the import.
Legal proceedings will commence once evidence is compiled and investigative findings are reviewed.
Bottom line: Delhi customs seized roughly 12.86 kg of suspected cannabis worth ₹4.5 crore from a passenger’s trolley bag arriving from Bangkok, prompting a thorough investigation into the smuggling attempt.
