Incident Overview

Kullu/Nitthar. In the early hours of Thursday, a small Alto car veered off the Dwarch road near the hamlet of Seri in the Nitthar sub‑tehsil of Kullu district, Himachal Pradesh. The vehicle plunged into a steep gorge estimated to be about 500 metres deep, killing both occupants instantly.

Eyewitnesses say the car was traveling toward Durah when it suddenly left the road and tumbled down the sheer drop. The impact was severe, and the car was left mangled beyond recognition.

Rescue Operation

Local residents who learned of the crash rushed to the site and joined the rescue team. Officers from the Nitthar police post, together with villagers, began a painstaking effort to recover the bodies despite the gorge’s depth and the treacherous terrain.

The operation stretched for several hours on Friday, roughly from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. After repeated attempts, the two bodies were finally hoisted to the road and handed over to authorities. They were later transported to Civil Hospital in Nirmand for post‑mortem examinations.

Victims Identified

The deceased have been identified as Hari Singh, a resident of Shah in Lot Gram Panchayat, and Shyam Lal, who lived in Dwarch, Durah Gram Panchayat. Both were travelling together at the time of the accident.

Official Statement

DSP Anni Rajiv Mehta confirmed the fatalities and indicated that the precise cause of the crash is under investigation by the police.

"The steep drop and the remote location made the rescue extremely challenging," said a local villager who assisted the effort.
